A major manhunt is underway for thieves who stole a safe holding tens of thousands of dollars in cash and jewellery in Perth. The offenders broke into a home in Gosnells on May 28, rummaging through a grandmother’s belongings before forcefully removing the lockbox. They then dragged it through the house, down the driveway, and fled Coulston Way.
Details of the Theft
Inside the safe was “tens of thousands” of dollars worth of cash and high-value jewellery, including a gold sovereign coin bracelet with deep sentimental value to its owner. Detective First Class Constable Kyle Vander Linden described the victim’s distress: “Having people go through your house is quite disturbing, rummaging through your items, taking your belongings ... she’s quite shaken.”
The break-in occurred between 7.30am and 1.30pm when the occupant, a woman in her 80s, was not home. At least two people are suspected of carrying out the burglary, but police are unsure of the exact number or whether they targeted the property because they knew the victim was absent.
Police Appeal for Information
“We’re very thankful that she wasn’t home and she is uninjured,” Vander Linden said. “She is very distraught.” Police have stated they are “doing everything we can to solve this” and hold those responsible “accountable for their actions.” Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and noted that several people were in the area at the time.
One man they wish to speak to was wearing a black cap, a black and white jacket with gold writing on the back, beige pants, and black runners. Police have appealed for public assistance and urge vigilance for items that may be put up for sale. “They could be sold at pawnbrokers, Cash Converters, gold dealers,” Vander Linden said. “Those are the kind of places that we’re looking.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
