A woman is set to face court after being charged over a crash that resulted in the death of an 11-year-old girl in northern New South Wales. The 50-year-old was allegedly driving a black SUV under the influence of drugs when the vehicle left the Bruxner Highway in Tenterfield around 3:30 pm on September 10.
According to police reports, the SUV collided with a tree before becoming submerged in a nearby dam. Emergency services arrived at the scene and pulled the 11-year-old girl from the water. Despite paramedics' efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman was also rescued by emergency crews and taken to Tenterfield Hospital in a stable condition. Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit were dispatched to investigate the incident.
More than nine months later, on Monday, the 50-year-old woman attended Tamworth Police Station, where she was issued a Court Attendance Notice. She is expected to appear before Tenterfield Local Court on Thursday, facing five charges, including dangerous driving causing death, negligent driving causing death, and driving while under the influence of drugs.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the local community, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing.
