The past week in Illawarra courtrooms has seen a range of cases, from serious assaults to drug-related offences and domestic violence incidents. Here is a comprehensive look at the key matters that were heard.
Assault Cases
In one notable case, a 34-year-old man was sentenced to 18 months in prison for assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The incident occurred in a Wollongong nightclub in March, where the victim suffered a broken jaw. The court heard that the accused had a prior criminal record but expressed remorse for his actions.
Another assault case involved a 22-year-old woman who was placed on a two-year community correction order for punching a security guard at a shopping centre. The guard sustained minor injuries, and the woman was ordered to undergo anger management counselling.
Drug Offences
Drug-related charges were also prominent this week. A 45-year-old man from Dapto was charged with possession of a prohibited drug and supply of a commercial quantity of cannabis. Police found 3 kilograms of cannabis in his vehicle during a routine traffic stop. He was granted bail to appear at a later date.
In another matter, a 28-year-old woman was fined $2,000 for possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The court noted her clean record and ordered her to attend drug rehabilitation.
Domestic Violence
Domestic violence cases continued to be a focus. A 40-year-old man was convicted of breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) and was sentenced to six months in prison. The court heard that he had contacted the victim multiple times despite the order.
Another case saw a 36-year-old woman receive a suspended sentence for assaulting her partner during an argument. She was also ordered to complete a behaviour change program.
These cases highlight the ongoing work of the Illawarra courts in addressing criminal behaviour and protecting the community. The court system continues to process a high volume of cases, with magistrates emphasising the importance of accountability and rehabilitation.
