Politicians, journalists, staffers and lobbyists dressed to impress at the annual Midwinter Ball on Wednesday night, hosted by the press gallery at Parliament House's Great Hall under the theme "Canberra Bubble."
Prime Minister and Opposition Leader's Fashion Choices
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wore a classic black tuxedo, while his wife Jodie Haydon opted for a black "Sofia" floral maxi dress from contemporary Australian designer Leo Lin's pre-fall collection. The dress features airy sleeves, intricate hand-embellishments and a vibrant floral and fruit print.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, perhaps dressing for the job he wants, wore a similar black tuxedo alongside his wife Louise Clegg.
Notable Attire and Statements
Labor MP Josh Burns also wore a black tuxedo with a white bow-tie, but his partner, Victorian Animal Justice MP Georgie Purcell, stole the spotlight in a black gown emblazoned with "Defund dog racing" over a cross, paired with gold boots.
Opposition social services and NDIS spokeswoman Melissa McIntosh descended the marble stairs in a red embroidered dress, accompanied by her sons Byron and Coby. Small Business Minister Anne Aly celebrated her Egyptian heritage with a crocheted dress and Egyptian-style necklace and bracelet. Opposition communications spokeswoman Sarah Henderson highlighted her velvet gown with a silver brooch, bag and shoes.
Independent MPs Allegra Spender, Zali Steggall, Kate Chaney, Monique Ryan, Sophie Scamps and Nicolette Boele arrived together, representing the Community Strong Australia movement. Jamie King, husband of Resources Minister Madeleine King, wore a red kilt while his wife donned a feathery black dress.
Entertainment and Speeches
The event remained off-the-record, but the prime minister and opposition leader typically deliver self-deprecating comedic speeches. Angus Taylor aimed to match his predecessor Sussan Ley's well-received 2025 address. Entertainment included Canberra comedian Chris Ryan, 2026 Australian Idol runner-up Harlan, and local covers band Smooth Ops, which advertises event packages from $4000.
Charity Fundraising
In 2025, the ball raised a record $370,000 for charities including Share the Dignity, Indigenous Reading Project, St John Youth, Are You Bogged Mate?, YWCA Canberra, Alcohol & Drug Foundation and the Terry Campese Foundation.
