As the ACT government gears up to release its upcoming budget, a recent survey has shed light on the key priorities of Canberra residents. The findings indicate that cost-of-living relief, increased health funding, and housing affordability top the list of concerns for locals.
Cost-of-Living Concerns Dominate
The survey, conducted by the Canberra Times, polled hundreds of residents to gauge their expectations for the budget. Overwhelmingly, respondents cited the rising cost of living as their primary worry. Many expressed a desire for measures such as reduced public transport fares, lower utility bills, and increased financial support for families.
One participant noted, “Everyday expenses are skyrocketing. We need the government to step in and provide some immediate relief.” This sentiment was echoed by a majority of those surveyed, with many calling for targeted assistance for low-income households.
Health Funding a Close Second
Health services emerged as the second most critical issue. Canberrans are advocating for increased investment in public hospitals, mental health services, and aged care. The survey revealed that long waiting times and understaffed facilities are significant concerns.
“We need more doctors and nurses, and better access to mental health support,” another resident commented. The ACT government has previously committed to expanding the Canberra Hospital, but residents are pushing for faster progress and additional resources for community health centers.
Housing Affordability Remains a Challenge
Housing affordability continues to be a pressing issue. Respondents highlighted the need for more social housing, rent assistance, and measures to curb rising property prices. Young people and first-home buyers particularly stressed the difficulty of entering the housing market.
“It’s nearly impossible to save for a deposit while paying high rent,” a young professional said. The survey suggests that Canberrans are looking for innovative solutions, such as shared equity schemes or increased density in suburban areas.
Other Key Priorities
Beyond the top three, residents also emphasized the importance of climate action, education funding, and infrastructure improvements. Many called for greater investment in renewable energy projects and public transport upgrades to reduce carbon emissions.
Education was another area of focus, with parents and teachers advocating for better funding for public schools and early childhood education. Infrastructure projects, such as road upgrades and cycle paths, were also mentioned as necessary for improving daily life.
Government Response
In response to the survey, a government spokesperson said, “We have listened to the community and are working to address these priorities in the upcoming budget. Our focus remains on delivering responsible financial management while supporting those who need it most.”
The ACT budget is expected to be released next week, with Treasurer Andrew Barr set to outline the government’s spending plans. Analysts predict that the budget will include significant allocations for health and cost-of-living measures, though details remain under wraps.
As Canberrans await the official announcement, the survey underscores the urgent need for targeted policies that alleviate financial pressure and improve quality of life. The coming weeks will reveal whether the government’s budget aligns with the community’s expectations.
