Alleged drink-driver crashes head-on, hostile to paramedics

A 27-year-old man accused of causing a head-on collision while under the influence of alcohol allegedly became hostile towards paramedics and the occupants of the other vehicle at the scene, police have reported.

The man, who is currently not being named, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, June 8, with his right arm in a sling. He has not yet entered pleas to charges of negligent driving and drink-driving. Following the court appearance, he was taken to a mental health hospital for assessment.

Details of the crash

According to police, the incident occurred around 8:30pm on Sunday when the man was driving his black Toyota Kluger down Mount Ainslie Drive. The collision involved a head-on impact with another vehicle.

Significant damage was caused to both cars, blocking the road in both directions, an ACT Policing spokesperson said. While being treated at the scene, the 27-year-old allegedly became aggressive towards paramedics and the people in the other car.

Arrest and charges

The driver was arrested after allegedly returning a positive result for alcohol during a roadside screening test. He now faces charges related to negligent driving and drink-driving.

The case is expected to return to court at a later date. The man remains under mental health evaluation.
