Balcatta Factory Fire Triggers HAZMAT Warning

Authorities have issued a hazard warning after a fire broke out in a chemical analysis lab at the ALS Metallurgy plant in Balcatta, sending potentially dangerous smoke across the suburb. The blaze started around 9pm on Monday, prompting the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to urge locals to stay inside, close all doors and windows, and switch off air conditioners.

Fire Contained, Warning Remains

Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, and police have described the incident as "non suspicious." Despite the fire being brought under control, the HAZMAT warning remained active on the DFES website as of 7:30am Tuesday. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area, reduce speed, and drive with caution.

Health Advisory for Residents

The smoke from the chemical lab fire may contain hazardous substances, leading DFES to recommend that residents in affected areas remain indoors until further notice. Those with respiratory conditions are particularly advised to take extra precautions. The warning covers parts of Balcatta and surrounding suburbs.
