A 34-year-old Canberra man has been denied bail after facing allegations of sexually abusing three women in separate incidents, with the court expressing serious concerns about his risk of reoffending and potential to flee.
Allegations and Charges
The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday, facing 12 charges including four counts of sexual assault without consent, three counts of act of indecency, and five counts of common assault. The alleged incidents occurred between 2019 and 2022, involving three women who were known to the accused.
Police allege that the man sexually assaulted one woman at a home in the inner north of Canberra in 2019, and indecently assaulted another woman at a separate location in 2021. The third alleged victim came forward earlier this year, reporting a series of assaults that took place in 2022.
Court Proceedings
During the bail hearing, Prosecutor Sarah Johnson argued that the man posed an unacceptable risk of committing further offences if released, citing the nature of the allegations and his prior criminal history. She also noted that the accused had made comments suggesting he might leave the jurisdiction.
Defence lawyer Mark Williams countered that his client had strong ties to the community, including full-time employment and family support, and that he was willing to abide by strict bail conditions, including a curfew and reporting requirements.
Magistrate Robert Cook, however, ruled that the risk of reoffending and flight was too high, stating that the allegations were serious and that the accused had demonstrated a pattern of behaviour that was concerning. He formally refused bail and remanded the man in custody until his next court appearance in December.
Victim Impact and Support
Outside the court, a support person for the alleged victims expressed relief at the decision, saying that the women had been living in fear since coming forward. They urged other victims of sexual assault to report their experiences to police.
The case has sparked discussion about the handling of sexual assault allegations in the ACT, with advocates calling for more support for victims and stricter bail laws for those accused of such crimes.
The accused will remain in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on December 14 for a committal hearing.
