A van driver in Kent has been praised for his quick thinking after he stopped to give a lift to an armed police officer who was chasing a suspect on foot. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the town of Ashford, when the officer, who was part of a specialist firearms unit, was pursuing a man wanted in connection with a robbery and firearms offences.

Driver's Quick Thinking

The driver, who has not been named, saw the officer running and pulled over to offer assistance. The officer jumped into the van and the driver followed the suspect's direction, allowing the officer to apprehend the man a short distance away. According to Kent Police, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Police Praise

Chief Inspector Steve Kent of Kent Police said, "This was an exceptional act of public-spiritedness. The driver's quick actions undoubtedly helped us to bring a dangerous individual into custody swiftly and safely. We are extremely grateful for his assistance." The force also praised the driver on social media, calling him a "true hero."

Suspect in Custody

The suspect, a 32-year-old man from Ashford, remains in police custody and is due to appear before magistrates later this week. No injuries were reported during the incident, and the officer involved has returned to duty. The van driver declined any reward, stating he was just glad to help.
