Victim's Clever Notes Pave Way to Rescue
Nancy Guthrie, a 64-year-old woman kidnapped from a California shopping mall, was rescued after 20 days in captivity thanks to a series of notes she secretly left in her abductor's vehicle. The notes, discovered by a mechanic, contained critical information that led police to her location.
The Abduction and Initial Search
Guthrie was taken from the parking lot of a mall in San Bernardino County on June 11, 2026. Authorities launched an extensive search, but leads were scarce. Her family pleaded for her safe return, and a reward was offered for information.
Discovery of the Notes
On June 30, a mechanic working on a vehicle in a nearby town found a crumpled note wedged in the door panel. It read: "Help me, I'm being held against my will. Call police." The mechanic immediately contacted authorities. Police found additional notes in the car, including one with a description of the suspect and the address where Guthrie was being held.
Rescue and Arrest
Acting on the information, police raided a residence in Victorville, California, on July 1. Guthrie was found unharmed and was reunited with her family. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Mark Thompson, was arrested at the scene and faces charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment.
Impact and Aftermath
Guthrie's rescue has been hailed as a testament to her courage and quick thinking. "She is an incredibly strong woman," said San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus. "Her actions likely saved her life." The case highlights the importance of leaving clues when possible. Guthrie is now recovering at home with her family, who expressed gratitude to the mechanic and law enforcement.
