A 37-year-old man from Scullin has been charged with assaulting a police officer at the ACT watch house following his arrest on Monday evening.

Incident details

The man was initially arrested for driving while his license was suspended. Police allege that during processing at the watch house, he became aggressive and assaulted a police officer, causing minor injuries.

According to police, the officer sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Court appearance

The accused appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he faced charges including common assault on a police officer and driving while suspended. He was granted bail under strict conditions, including a ban from driving and a requirement to reside at his Scullin address.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Mark Rowley told the court that the alleged assault occurred when the man was being placed in a cell. “He lashed out and struck the officer in the face,” Rowley said.

Legal consequences

Driving while suspended carries a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment or a fine of up to $5,000. Assaulting a police officer can result in up to five years in prison.

The matter was adjourned to next month for further mention.
