A 34-year-old man has been charged with two counts of causing wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder after a violent home invasion in rural New South Wales. The incident occurred at a residence in Torrington, approximately 65 kilometres south-west of Tenterfield, just after midnight on Thursday.
Details of the Attack
Emergency services were called to the property after a 75-year-old man and his 72-year-old wife were allegedly attacked by the intruder. Police reported that the woman sustained stab wounds to the chest and collapsed, while the man was slashed across the abdomen. The alleged offender then fled onto the veranda.
The 75-year-old man managed to call emergency services, prompting a response from police and paramedics. According to police, the intruder attempted to re-enter the property and was shot by the resident.
Victims' Condition
The elderly couple were treated at the scene by paramedics for serious injuries before being airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition. Police have confirmed that both victims remain in a critical but stable condition. New England Police District Superintendent Chris McKinnon expressed hope that they would recover.
Offender's Status
The alleged intruder, who police believe is not known to the couple, was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound before being transported under police guard to Armidale Hospital. He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. He has been charged and refused bail, and is scheduled to appear in Bail Division Local Court 5 via audio-visual link on Thursday.
Police Statement
Superintendent McKinnon told 2GB Radio that the 75-year-old man retrieved a knife from the kitchen after being stabbed and used it to defend himself, wounding the offender. The elderly man then retrieved his firearm and fired a single shot into the intruder's stomach when he tried to re-enter the house. Police believe the resident is a licensed gun owner.
