A shooting at a Texas detention center during a protest on Wednesday resulted in one death and several injuries, according to local law enforcement. The incident occurred at the South Texas Detention Complex in Pearsall, where demonstrators had gathered to protest immigration policies.
Details of the Incident
The Frio County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the shooting took place around 2 p.m. local time. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots as clashes erupted between protesters and security personnel. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while at least three others were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Protest Context
The demonstration was part of a nationwide series of protests against immigration detention centers, which have faced criticism for overcrowding and poor conditions. Organizers stated that the protest was peaceful until the shooting occurred.
According to a spokesperson for the advocacy group Texas Freedom Network, "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the victim's family. We urge authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation."
Official Response
Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement calling for calm and promising a full investigation. "Violence has no place in our state," Abbott said. "We will ensure justice is served."
The detention center, operated by a private contractor, houses approximately 2,000 detainees. This incident marks the first major violence at the facility since its opening in 2018.
