Two men have been arrested following a police pursuit in Canberra on Tuesday night, with both individuals reportedly on bail at the time of the incident. The chase began around 8:30 pm when officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the suburb of Gungahlin.
Details of the Pursuit
According to ACT Policing, the driver failed to stop for police, leading to a short pursuit through residential streets. The vehicle was eventually stopped in the suburb of Franklin, where the two male occupants were taken into custody without further incident. Police allege the vehicle had been stolen.
Bail Status and Charges
Both men, aged 27 and 30, were on bail for unrelated offences at the time of their arrest. They are expected to face charges including failing to stop for police, driving a stolen motor vehicle, and breaching bail conditions. The 27-year-old driver also faces charges of reckless driving.
Community Safety Concerns
ACT Policing Inspector Mark Richardson said the incident highlights ongoing issues with repeat offenders. “It is concerning that individuals on bail are allegedly involved in further criminal activity. We urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour,” he said.
Legal Proceedings
The two men are scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Police have not ruled out laying additional charges as investigations continue. The stolen vehicle has been seized for forensic examination.
This incident comes amid a broader crackdown by ACT Policing on vehicle theft and related offences, with a 15% increase in stolen vehicle reports in the past year. Authorities are working to address underlying factors contributing to recidivism.
