A Western Australian father of three, Brodie Stokes, is facing a difficult recovery after allegedly being assaulted during a confrontation over hooning outside his property. The 43-year-old suffered brain damage, skull fractures, and cerebral swelling following the incident in early May.
Alleged Assault Details
Kade David Duthie, 22, has been charged with grievous bodily harm after allegedly punching Stokes. The confrontation occurred on May 15 outside Stokes' home in Deepdale, where Duthie was reportedly doing burnouts in his Toyota LandCruiser. CCTV footage shows Stokes approaching the vehicle before Duthie delivered a single punch, causing Stokes to fall and hit his head on the ground.
Legal Defense
Duthie's lawyer argued in court that Stokes allegedly swung at Duthie three times before the punch, claiming self-defense. The court heard that Stokes will struggle to resume a normal life due to the extent of his injuries.
Medical Condition
Stokes has been in the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital since the assault. He was placed in an induced coma and is now in stable condition after weeks of fighting for his life. Medical reports indicate permanent brain damage and significant cognitive and physical challenges.
Community Support
A GoFundMe page, started by a relative, has raised nearly $30,000 to support Stokes' family. The page describes him as a loving husband, father, son, and friend who always helped others. "Every donation, prayer, and share means the world to our family and gives us strength and hope during this critical time," the relative wrote.
Next Court Appearance
Duthie is scheduled to reappear in court on June 18. The case has drawn attention to the dangers of hooning and the consequences of confrontations escalating into violence.
