Transport Canberra is mourning the loss of Michael John Pearlman, a beloved driver trainer who spent 18 years with the organisation, training hundreds of bus drivers across the capital.
A Dedicated Career
Pearlman, known to colleagues as 'Pearls', joined Transport Canberra in 2006 as a bus driver before becoming a driver trainer. He was instrumental in shaping the skills of new drivers, ensuring they met the high standards required for public transport.
Transport Canberra director of bus operations, John Smith, described Pearlman as a 'true professional' who was passionate about his work. 'He had a gift for teaching and a genuine care for the drivers he trained,' Smith said.
Impact on Colleagues
Pearlman's death has deeply affected his colleagues, many of whom considered him a mentor and friend. A memorial book has been opened at the Transport Canberra depot for staff to share their memories.
Driver trainer Sarah Jones recalled Pearlman's patience and humour. 'He could make anyone feel at ease behind the wheel. He will be greatly missed,' she said.
Legacy
Pearlman's legacy lives on through the hundreds of drivers he trained, who now serve the Canberra community. Transport Canberra has announced plans to name a training room after him in recognition of his contributions.
The organisation has also offered counselling services to staff affected by his passing.
