A man in his 30s is fighting for life after being bitten by a shark while diving off the coast of Western Australia. The incident occurred near Michaelmas Island, close to Albany, approximately 375 kilometres south-east of Perth.
Details of the attack
Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries reported that the man was bitten by a suspected 4.5-metre shark just before 11:30am AWST on Saturday. He was diving in the waters around Michaelmas Island when the attack happened. St John Ambulance paramedics treated the man on the shore after he was brought to land. Multiple crews remained at the scene, and the man had not yet been taken to hospital as of Saturday afternoon. He sustained critical injuries.
Authorities respond
The department has urged the public to exercise additional caution in the Michaelmas Island area and to follow any beach closures advised by local park rangers or surf life savers. Authorities are working with police and other local agencies to coordinate the response to the incident.
