Bayswater introduces permanent 40km/h zones near schools and shops
Bayswater permanent 40km/h zone for residential streets

Residential streets across parts of Bayswater are now permanently slower, with a new 40km/h speed zone rolled out to improve safety around schools, shops and busy local roads.

New speed limits introduced

The City of Bayswater has introduced the reduced speed limit across residential streets bounded by Guildford Road, Garratt Road, Whatley Crescent and King William Street, along with sections of Olfe Street, Hamilton Street and Whatley Crescent.

Under the changes, existing 40km/h school zones in the area will now operate at all times, while the 30km/h speed limit on Leake Street remains unchanged. A section of King William Street has also been reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h.

Signage and markings installed

New signage and road markings have been installed throughout the area to alert motorists to the updated limits.

The changes come after council endorsed the initiative last year, citing the area’s proximity to several schools, the Safe Active Street network and the Bayswater Town Centre.

Context of the rollout

The rollout also follows completion of the Bayswater train station upgrade and the installation of low-cost urban road safety treatments in the area.

Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said lowering speed limits was one of the most effective ways to reduce the severity of crashes and improve safety for people using local streets.

“Lowering speed limits is one of the most effective ways to improve road safety outcomes, particularly in areas where people walk, ride and connect with their neighbourhood,” she said.

“This initiative will make our residential streets safer for everyone, whether you’re walking to school, cycling to the shops or simply driving locally.”

The project was delivered in partnership with Main Roads WA.
