Permanent 40km/h Zone Introduced in Bayswater Residential Streets

The City of Bayswater has implemented a permanent 40km/h speed zone across several residential streets, aiming to enhance safety around schools, shops, and busy local roads. The new speed limit applies to streets bounded by Guildford Road, Garratt Road, Whatley Crescent, and King William Street, as well as sections of Olfe Street, Hamilton Street, and Whatley Crescent.

Under the changes, existing 40km/h school zones in the area will now operate at all times, while the 30km/h limit on Leake Street remains unchanged. A section of King William Street has been reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h. New signage and road markings have been installed to alert motorists to the updated limits.

The initiative was endorsed by the council last year, citing the area's proximity to several schools, the Safe Active Street network, and the Bayswater Town Centre. The rollout follows the completion of the Bayswater train station upgrade and the installation of low-cost urban road safety treatments.

Mayor Filomena Piffaretti stated that lowering speed limits is one of the most effective ways to reduce crash severity and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The project was delivered in partnership with Main Roads WA.
