A recently approved redevelopment in Woonona is set to alleviate Wollongong's aged care bed shortage, which currently sees a shortfall of approximately 1000 beds in the region. The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District reports that on any given day, between 100 and 150 elderly individuals remain in public hospitals because no residential care beds are available for their discharge.
Redevelopment Details
IRT received approval earlier this month to redevelop its facility along the Princes Highway, which will be renamed Woonona Place. The project will increase the site's residential capacity to accommodate about 240 residents. Plans include 92 new independent living units spread across five multi-storey apartment blocks, along with a refurbishment and upgrade of the existing 100-bed Flame Tree Residential Care Home.
Addressing Growing Demand
IRT CEO Ross Gallagher emphasized the urgent need for such development. "People aged 75 and over are the fastest-growing demographic in NSW, yet the supply of seniors' housing has not kept pace," Mr. Gallagher said. He explained that Woonona Place aims to elevate housing delivery for an ageing population, enabling residents to live with greater independence, connection, and confidence as their needs evolve.
The integration of independent living units and residential aged care at the same site is a key feature. The 92 units will comprise two and three-bedroom apartments, complemented by a social and wellness centre, an indoor hydrotherapy pool, a gym, a resident clubhouse, and a library. The heritage-listed church on the property will be preserved and transformed into a restaurant open to both residents and the broader community.
Project Timeline
A principal contractor for the project is expected to be appointed in the coming months, with construction slated to commence later this year. This development represents a significant step toward addressing the critical shortage of aged care beds in the Illawarra region.
