The ACT government has performed a dramatic backflip, reinstating the $2,500 rent relief fund for tenants struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheme, which was initially cut earlier this month, will now be available to eligible tenants until the end of June 2021.

Government U-turn

Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry announced the reversal on Wednesday, saying the government had listened to feedback from the community and stakeholders. The decision to cut the fund had sparked outrage among tenant advocacy groups and opposition politicians, who argued it would leave vulnerable renters without support.

Eligibility Criteria

The $2,500 grant is available to tenants who have lost at least 30% of their household income due to COVID-19 and are paying more than 30% of their income on rent. Applicants must also have less than $5,000 in savings. The fund is capped at $2,500 per household and can be used to cover rent arrears or future rent payments.

Application Process

Tenants can apply through the ACT government's website or by contacting the Tenants' Union ACT. The government has also allocated additional funding to ensure the scheme can meet demand. Ms Berry said the government would continue to monitor the situation and adjust support as needed.

Reactions

Tenant advocacy groups welcomed the reversal, but called for more long-term solutions to housing affordability. The opposition accused the government of being out of touch and urged it to work more closely with renters and landlords. The ACT Council of Social Service said the reinstatement was a positive step but stressed the need for ongoing support as the pandemic continues to impact the economy.

The government has also extended the moratorium on evictions for tenants unable to pay rent due to COVID-19 until the end of March 2021. Landlords are encouraged to negotiate payment plans with tenants before seeking eviction.
