Alleged fuel thief caught after $2870 diesel theft in Sydney

A 22-year-old man accused of stealing nearly $2900 worth of diesel from a petrol station in Sydney's south is set to face court, police have confirmed.

The alleged incident

According to police, the man visited a service station at approximately 7.15pm on April 11, where he filled multiple large drums and jerry cans with diesel. The total volume of fuel taken was 915 litres, valued at $2870.

However, when it came time to pay the bill at the kiosk, the man allegedly drove off in his white utility vehicle without making any payment.

Investigation and arrest

Police launched an investigation into the theft and subsequently arrested the accused at Goulburn Police Station on Thursday. He was issued a court attendance notice for dishonestly obtaining property by deception and was granted bail.

The man is scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Court on June 15.

Rise in fuel thefts

Fuel thefts from service stations have increased since the onset of the Middle East conflict. However, even before the war began, fuel "drive-offs" were reportedly costing retailers around $80 million annually.

Authorities continue to remind motorists that stealing fuel is a serious offence with legal consequences.
