Motorists in Perth are bracing for a severe impact from the ongoing fuel crisis, with the average price of diesel expected to exceed three dollars per litre on Wednesday. This sharp increase adds to the financial strain on drivers already grappling with rising costs across the board.
Widespread Price Hikes Forecasted
Fuel Watch WA has issued a forecast indicating significant price rises for various fuel types. Regular unleaded petrol is projected to climb by an additional 11 cents, reaching an average of $2.57 per litre, while premium unleaded is set to average around $2.84 per litre. These increases reflect broader market pressures affecting fuel availability and pricing.
Brand-Specific Cost Variations
Among fuel retailers, Ampol and Caltex are anticipated to be the most expensive brands, whereas Vibe and independent stations are expected to offer more affordable options. This disparity highlights the competitive landscape as consumers seek out the best deals amidst the crisis.
Supply Shortages and Consumer Warnings
Consumer Protection Commissioner Trish Blakely has issued a strong warning to motorists, urging them to purchase only the fuel necessary to fill their vehicles and to avoid stockpiling. This advice comes in response to reports that six petrol stations in regional Western Australia have already run out of fuel, exacerbating supply concerns.
Commissioner Blakely explained the challenges in monitoring fuel availability, stating, "We’ve looked at this issue about supply, and it gets really tricky. On the Fuel Watch website, retailers have a toggle switch to indicate when fuel is temporarily unavailable. That’s where the six stations have come from, as they’ve reported having no fuel at the moment."
She further noted, "Supply becomes a tricky thing to report on because if we ask retail outlets to specify their exact stock levels, we must remember it’s only a point-in-time snapshot."
Government Initiatives for Improved Reporting
In response to these challenges, the State Government is actively developing a new digital reporting system. This initiative aims to provide more accurate and timely updates on fuel stocks, helping to better inform consumers and manage supply chain disruptions in the future.
The fuel crisis continues to unfold, with motorists advised to stay updated through official channels and exercise caution in their fuel purchasing habits to mitigate further shortages.
