Perth Motorists Embrace Fuel Price Dip as Burk Cannington Offers Month-Low Unleaded

Perth drivers have enthusiastically welcomed a modest decrease in fuel costs, with one service station in Cannington selling unleaded petrol for as low as 188.3 cents per litre over the weekend. This price marks the cheapest fuel available in the city for the past month, drawing motorists from various suburbs to fill up their tanks.

Drivers Express Relief Amid High Costs

While 188.3 cents per litre remains a significant expense, many drivers viewed it as a comparative bargain in the current economic climate. The reduction was attributed to a combination of factors, including cuts to the fuel excise and GST by state governments, alongside slightly lower global oil prices. Across the metropolitan area, nearly 30 service stations were offering fuel below $2 per litre, with the average price for unleaded sitting at 216.5 cents.

Michelle Hobbs, a museum curator from Lesmurdie, shared her experience: "I saw the low price yesterday but couldn't access the station due to traffic. Today, I made a special trip while out for breakfast, as prices near my home in Kalamunda are much higher." Her comments highlight the relief felt by many Perth residents struggling with rising living costs.

International and Local Perspectives on Fuel Savings

Julie Santos, a 29-year-old Portuguese national on a working holiday visa, expressed her delight at seeing fuel prices dip below $2 for the first time since arriving in Australia in March. "In Europe, fuel costs are equivalent to six or seven dollars Australian, so this is a welcome change," she said. As a traffic controller who drives long distances daily, the price drop is crucial for her tight budget.

Geologist Kifayat Hussain, 45, noted that he had been reducing his driving due to escalating fuel prices. "This is a welcome relief, and I topped up my tank even though it was more than half full, anticipating that low prices won't last," he remarked, hoping for stability in the Middle East to further normalize costs.

Diesel Prices Also See a Decline

Diesel fuel at Burk Cannington was available for under $3 per litre, providing additional savings for drivers like Cameron Brewer, 31. "Last time I fueled up, it cost $200 for half a tank, so today's price is a nice convenience," he said. Brewer and his wife have adjusted their travel arrangements, with her now driving the diesel vehicle for shorter commutes to save money.

Across Perth, the average diesel price dropped six cents to 315.9 cents per litre, with further decreases expected. On Sunday, unleaded fuel was projected to fall by 1.6 cents to an average of 214.9 cents, while diesel would drop one cent to 314.9 cents. Burk Cannington is set to remain the city's cheapest option at 188.3 cents per litre.

Looking Ahead for Perth Motorists

This temporary reprieve in fuel prices offers a brief respite for Perth drivers, who have faced consistently high costs in recent months. The last time fuel was this affordable was on March 11, when Costco Airport and Casuarina offered prices as low as 184.7 cents per litre. As global oil markets fluctuate, motorists remain hopeful for more sustained relief in the future.
