A Wollongong man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a brutal methamphetamine-fuelled attack that left a tradesman with a severed leg in a shocking workplace incident.
Horrific Worksite Attack
Matthew William Lawson, aged 34, launched a violent assault on tradesman Trae Blacks at a Woonona construction site on February 17, 2023. The attack occurred after Lawson, high on methamphetamine, became enraged and grabbed a circular saw, directing it toward Mr Blacks' leg.
The court heard how the powerful saw blade cut completely through Mr Blacks' leg, causing catastrophic injuries. Witnesses described a scene of horror as the tradesman lay bleeding profusely while Lawson continued his violent rampage.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
During sentencing in Wollongong District Court, Judge Andrew Haesler detailed the severity of the attack and its lasting impact on the victim. Lawson received an eight-year prison sentence with a non-parole period of five years, meaning he will be eligible for release in February 2028.
The judge noted that Lawson's methamphetamine use significantly contributed to the violent outburst. Evidence presented in court revealed that the defendant had consumed the drug prior to the attack, leading to impaired judgment and extreme aggression.
Life-Changing Consequences
Trae Blacks suffered permanent, life-altering injuries from the attack. The circular saw completely severed his leg, requiring extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. The physical and psychological trauma has fundamentally changed his life and ability to work.
In his victim impact statement, Mr Blacks described the ongoing challenges he faces daily since the attack. The court acknowledged the profound effect on his quality of life, relationships, and career prospects as a tradesperson.
Judge Haesler emphasized the seriousness of workplace violence and the need for community protection from drug-fuelled attacks. The sentence reflects both punishment for Lawson's actions and recognition of the permanent harm caused to the victim.
