NSW Officially Gains New Public Holiday for Anzac Day Weekends

Premier Chris Minns has officially declared a new public holiday for New South Wales, fulfilling a promise made earlier this year. The announcement comes as Anzac Day is set to fall on a weekend in both 2026 and 2027, prompting the need for an additional day off.

Official Amendment and State Alignment

In a Facebook post on Friday, Minns shared a picture of the signed amendment to the NSW Public Holidays Act, executed by Industrial Relations Minister Sophie Cotsis. The amendment states, "The object of this order is to declare additional public holidays on 27 April 2026 and 26 April 2027 for the whole of the state as Anzac Day falls on a weekend in 2026 and 2027." This move brings NSW in line with the Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia, which already have similar provisions.

Public Reaction and Criticism

Many residents expressed gratitude online, with comments like "Good on ya Chris" and praise for the premier's swift action. However, not all feedback was positive. Sydney Recital Hall director Scott Phillips voiced concerns on social media, stating, "ANZAC Day is not an excuse for a day off work. It's a day of commemoration." He suggested adding the public holiday elsewhere to maintain the solemnity of the occasion.

Premier's Defense and Business Concerns

Premier Minns defended the decision, arguing that the extra day off does not diminish Anzac Day's importance but rather reinforces it by encouraging attendance at local services and fostering remembrance across generations. On the other hand, small businesses have raised objections due to increased operational costs. The Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association highlighted that public holiday wages can surge up to 250 percent, with 75–100 percent of daily revenue going to staff. They explained that surcharges are necessary to cover these expenses and keep businesses afloat, not for profit.

Impact on Public Holiday Count

With this addition, NSW's total annual public holidays rise to 13 days. Previously, the state had the fewest public holidays in the country, with only three extra days beyond the 10 nationally designated ones. In contrast, states like Victoria, Queensland, the ACT, and South Australia enjoy three to four more public holidays than NSW.
