Shellharbour Workers Get Priority Lung Screening

Mobile Lung Screening Clinic Arrives in Shellharbour with Focus on At-Risk Workers

A specialised mobile health clinic known as the Lung Bus will be stationed at Stockland Shellharbour on Monday, offering complimentary lung screening checks to the local community. This initiative is particularly aimed at workers who may have been exposed to hazardous dust in their occupations.

Government-Funded Service Targets Early Detection of Dust-Related Illnesses

The Lung Bus is a service funded by the New South Wales government, designed to facilitate the early identification of dust diseases such as asbestosis, silicosis, and mesothelioma. These conditions are often linked to prolonged exposure to respirable crystalline silica and other harmful particles in workplaces like construction, mining, and manufacturing.

Work Health and Safety Minister Sophie Cotsis emphasised the importance of this mobile clinic. "The Lung Bus represents another crucial measure in safeguarding workers from dust diseases," she stated. "It complements recent governmental actions, including the implementation of the Silica Worker Register, the prohibition of engineered stone, the formation of the Tunnelling Dust Safety Taskforce, and the creation of a dedicated silica unit within SafeWork NSW."

Prioritising Shellharbour Workers Based on Silica Exposure Register

The Silica Worker Register plays a pivotal role in this health initiative. It assists in identifying and monitoring individuals who have encountered respirable crystalline silica throughout their careers. Data from this register is integrated with services like the mobile clinic to ensure that those at highest risk receive priority screening.

In Shellharbour, 23 workers are currently listed on the register and are being given precedence for screening due to potential occupational silica exposure. This targeted approach aims to maximise the effectiveness of the health checks.

Comprehensive Health Checks Available Onsite

The lung health assessments, which typically take around 30 minutes, encompass several components:

  • Chest X-rays to detect any abnormalities or damage in the lungs.
  • Lung function testing to evaluate respiratory capacity.
  • Consultation with a specialist doctor to discuss results and concerns.

If necessary, the doctor can issue a referral for a CT scan to obtain a more detailed image of the chest and lungs, aiding in accurate diagnosis.

Local MP Advocates for Community Accessibility

Shellharbour MP Anna Watson highlighted the convenience offered by the mobile clinic. "For many people, daily life often interferes with regular medical check-ups," she remarked. "By bringing this service directly to the community, we are eliminating one more obstacle to maintaining good health. Whether you are employed in construction, mining, manufacturing, or simply reside in the area, we encourage everyone to take a few minutes to get checked."

The Lung Bus will be accessible at Stockland Shellharbour, providing a vital resource for early detection and proactive health management in the region.
