$5M Blueprint: Hunter Mine Transformation to Drive Australia's Economic Future
Hunter mine sites get $5m transformation blueprint

The Hunter Region is set to become a national model for economic transformation with the finalisation of a $5 million funding agreement to repurpose two major mine sites. This landmark initiative will create master plans for BHP's Mt Arthur operation in Muswellbrook and Glencore's Macquarie Coal site near Lake Macquarie.

Building Regional Resilience Through Strategic Planning

Federal Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres announced the completed agreement in Muswellbrook on Thursday, emphasising the project's significance beyond mere planning. "This funding is about more than planning—it's about delivering a future for the Hunter that works for people, business, and the environment," Minister Ayres declared.

The initiative, which received campaign announcement during the 2025 federal election, is funded through the Commonwealth's Net Zero Economy Authority with additional in-kind support from the New South Wales government. Minister Ayres highlighted that repurposing these significant sites would "unlock new opportunities and ensure the region remains a powerhouse for generations to come."

Hunter Communities Prepare for Economic Transition

With several Hunter Valley mines approaching planned closure dates, local leaders have welcomed the funding as crucial for ensuring investment readiness. Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton described the master plans as essential for preparing the region for its next economic chapter.

"Muswellbrook has powered the state and the country for generations, and we're determined to stay at the heart of the Hunter's economic future," Mayor Drayton stated. "This funding gives certainty to plan properly, take action on the record industrial closure Muswellbrook is facing, and make sure our community isn't left waiting for action that should've happened years ago."

The mayor emphasised that Muswellbrook already stands at the forefront of mining land use innovation, with the immediate challenge being "to turn planning into the projects, jobs and investment our Shire deserves."

Creating a National Blueprint for Mining Communities

David Shankey, Chief Executive of the Net Zero Economy Authority, revealed the Hunter projects could serve as a replicable model for mining communities across Australia. "Through practical partnerships and evidence-based planning, we are building new development pathways that will drive industry growth and support jobs in regions like the Hunter," Mr Shankey explained.

The master plans will specifically focus on transforming the former mine sites into productive, sustainable assets that generate new opportunities for employment, investment and innovation throughout the Hunter Region. This approach aims to deliver economic resilience while supporting communities through the transition away from traditional mining operations.

The November 20 announcement represents a significant step in preparing the Hunter Valley for a diversified economic future, ensuring the region continues to contribute to Australia's prosperity while adapting to changing energy and industrial landscapes.
