Barbeques Galore Closes: 500 Jobs Lost, 62 Stores Shut

Iconic Australian brand Barbeques Galore is set to close its doors in the coming weeks, resulting in hundreds of job losses and the closure of dozens of stores nationwide. Approximately 500 employees will face redundancy by the end of June, with 62 company-owned locations shutting down. The store closures are expected to begin from June 16.

Gift Card Redemption Conditions

All gift cards will be honored, but it is understood they will only be redeemable if customers spend twice the value in cash on top of the gift card's value. In a statement, Barbeques Galore said the next steps involve implementing a controlled closure process, with transitional arrangements in place for 27 franchisee-owned and operated stores.

Background of the Closure

The news comes after the beloved Australian company entered voluntary administration in February. Global firm Ankura was appointed receiver and manager, with the business requiring restructuring. However, efforts to save the business failed. Barbeques Galore was purchased by US private equity firm Gordon Brothers in late 2025, with the buyout secured for a nominal fee according to the Australian Financial Review.

Barbeques Galore posted $172 million in revenue for the 2024 financial year, similar to 2023, but with a pre-tax loss of $16.1 million, up from $4.7 million the year before. The company began in Sydney in 1977 and soon expanded into the US. It listed and then delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange, later listing on the Nasdaq on Wall Street, but the US division was driven to bankruptcy by the 2008 financial crisis. Sydney-based Quadrant bought the Australian business in 2016, along with Amart Furniture.
