Hundreds of enthusiastic residents in Cairns have demonstrated their Irish pride by gathering at one of the city's most iconic Irish pubs for extensive St Patrick's Day celebrations, which prominently featured the consumption of sixty kegs of Guinness draught beer.

A vibrant sea of green flooded the Cairns City area on St Patrick's Day as crowds swarmed P.J. O'Brien's Irish pub located on Lake Street. The all-day festivities included traditional Irish breakfasts served with pints, lively live music performances, and of course, ample supplies of Guinness beer.
Expectations for Massive Turnout
Sun Tourism Group operations manager Mick Hasler confirmed that P.J. O'Brien's anticipated an enormous turnout for the holiday celebrations. "Last year's event fell on a Monday and still exceeded all expectations," Mr Hasler explained. "This year we are expecting several thousand people to participate in the celebrations."
Mr Hasler noted that by 4pm, significant queues had formed outside the establishment, with lines expected to persist until midnight. To accommodate the anticipated demand, the Irish bar proactively ordered sixty kegs of Guinness specifically for the St Patrick's Day festivities.
Guinness as Celebration Essential
"Guinness and Great Northern are consistently our best-selling beverages on St Paddy's Day," Mr Hasler revealed. He emphasized the significance of the occasion for Irish pubs, describing it as "the New Year's Eve for Irish establishments" that typically outperforms other major celebration days by a considerable margin.
Local Perspectives on Irish Traditions
Local resident Irish Colliver, who identifies with Australian-Irish convict ancestry, shared that he has celebrated St Patrick's Day throughout his entire life. "It represents the only true public holiday in my view," Mr Colliver stated emphatically.
For Mr Colliver, consuming Guinness on St Patrick's Day remains an absolute non-negotiable tradition. "I enjoy Guinness whenever my budget allows," he explained, "but on St Paddy's Day specifically, I drink nothing but Guinness from morning straight through to night."
