During National Volunteer Week (May 18-24), Warrigal is honouring the invaluable contributions of its volunteers, whose selfless efforts enrich the lives of older people every day. Warrigal, a community-owned, for-purpose organisation, delivers aged care services across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory through residential care homes, community villages, home services, and social support programs.
A Legacy of Volunteerism
Founded by volunteers nearly six decades ago, Warrigal acknowledges the enduring role volunteers play in shaping the organisation and supporting local communities. This year's National Volunteer Week holds special significance, following the recent celebration of 50 years of dedicated service by the Warrigal Care Auxiliary. What began in 1976 as a small group of committed volunteers has blossomed into a robust and resilient Auxiliary that continues to support Warrigal residents and the wider community with passion, generosity, and pride.
CEO Expresses Gratitude
Warrigal CEO Jenni Hutchins expressed profound gratitude for this remarkable community of volunteers. "At Warrigal, our vision is a world where older people feel known, loved, and connected. For 50 years, the Warrigal Care Auxiliary has helped bring that vision to life. Not through grand gestures, but through showing up, week after week, year after year, with kindness and commitment," she said. "On behalf of every resident whose life you have touched, every family who has felt your warmth, and every Warrigal team member who has worked alongside you: thank you."
Every Volunteer Matters
While Auxiliary members were formally recognised for their years of service, Ms Hutchins emphasised that every volunteer plays a crucial role within the organisation. "Every volunteer is part of the fabric of Warrigal," she stated. "Warrigal's volunteer community is made up of people from all walks of life, bringing different ages, backgrounds, cultures, skills, and lived experiences." This diversity, she noted, helps older people feel understood, connected, and part of a vibrant community. Whether driving buses, organising social activities, or simply sharing a cup of tea and conversation, every act of kindness from a Warrigal volunteer leaves a lasting impact.
Get Involved: Your Year to Volunteer
The 2026 National Volunteer Week theme, 'Your Year to Volunteer', encourages Australians to make this the year they embrace volunteering and create meaningful change in their communities. Volunteers are always welcome at Warrigal locations across the Illawarra, Southern Highlands, Queanbeyan, and Canberra regions.
