Police Probe Continues After Devastating Fire at Lake Macquarie High School
Emergency services responded to a severe fire at Glendale Technology High School on Oakland Street in Lake Macquarie in the early hours of Monday, April 20. The blaze engulfed a two-storey canteen building, prompting a swift response from authorities. Lake Macquarie police officers attended the scene and established a crime scene, with the investigation into the cause of the fire still ongoing as of Tuesday.
School Closure and Remote Learning Arrangements
As the police investigation continues, students returning from holidays were asked to stay away from the school campus. Originally scheduled to return on Wednesday, students have been instructed to learn from home for the remainder of the week. This decision was made to ensure the wellbeing of students and staff while work is completed to restore services and make the site safe.
A NSW Department of Education spokesperson stated, "Parents of students who cannot learn from home are asked to advise the school to discuss alternative arrangements." These arrangements may include transport between the high school bus bay and the nearby Argenton Public School. Students able to study from home are encouraged to use the Learning Remotely portal on the school's website.
Emergency Response and Damage Assessment
More than 50 firefighters and 12 fire trucks, along with Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) rescue and rehabilitation teams, were deployed to combat the intense fire. FRNSW Chief Superintendent Terrence Farley praised the efforts, saying, "They've done an amazing job at containing the fire to within that structure and limiting any further damage to any other buildings within the school."
The fire, which was extinguished after several hours, destroyed the building housing the school canteen, a basketball court, an assembly area, and a wellbeing hub. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Specialist investigators from FRNSW are expected to collaborate with police to determine the cause of the blaze.

The Department of Education anticipates that students and staff will return to the Glendale Technology High School campus on Tuesday, April 28, though some timetable and room changes are expected. Parents and carers will have these arrangements confirmed by Monday, April 27. In the meantime, staff returning for professional development on Monday were relocated to another school.
