Sydney School Community in Mourning After Recent Graduate's Tragic Death
A recent graduate from a prestigious Sydney boys' school has tragically passed away due to an injury he sustained while interstate earlier this week. Oscar Todd, who was part of the graduating class of 2025 at The King's School, was in North Queensland when he suffered the injury two days prior to his death on Monday.
Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Oscar did not recover and sadly passed away, The King's School confirmed in an official statement released to the public. This heartbreaking loss comes less than six months after the death of his fellow classmate, Astin Gerstl, who was swept away in a rip while celebrating Schoolies on Little Bay Beach in Arakoon on the NSW Mid North Coast late last year.
Heartfelt Tributes and Support from the Community
In a poignant display of solidarity, Gerstl's mother, Amy Cartwright, reached out to Todd's parents through a comment on The King's School's online tribute page on Thursday. I know the nightmare all too well, she wrote, offering her support during this difficult time. I'm sure it's all an awful blur right now.
The school has paid a moving tribute to Oscar Todd, remembering him as a creative, athletic, and deeply admired young man. Oscar was a gifted visual artist and talented sportsman. He brought creativity and imagination to all he undertook, the school's statement reads. It further highlights his warmth, humour, and steady presence, which made him a treasured friend to many and a young man admired by staff and students alike.
A Life of Achievement and Deep Connections
Oscar Todd was actively involved in various school activities, including rugby, rowing, and serving as a staff sergeant in The King's School Cadet Corps. His connection to King's ran deep, the school emphasized, noting that he joined the school in Year 6 and came from a long line of Old Boys—the term used for students and alumni of the institution.
- His brother graduated from the school in 2024.
- His father was an alumnus from 1991.
- His uncle and cousin also attended The King's School.
Outpouring of Grief on Social Media
Hundreds of messages of condolence have flooded social media platforms, with heartfelt tributes pouring in for Todd's grieving family. One person shared, Oscar was such a beautiful soul who was loved by everyone. Another added, What a legend of a man. Gone too young. Reflecting on personal memories, a friend wrote, I will forever cherish those Melrose bus trips. A touching tribute stated, We were so lucky to know you mate. You were the most amazing influence on the people around you and you've left an enormous hole that can never be filled. Your mates miss you so much.
The school community and beyond continue to mourn the loss of this promising young individual, whose life was cut short far too soon.
