Jessica Blunt Takes Center Stage in WA Opera's La Traviata at His Majesty's Theatre

WA Opera is set to present a captivating production of La Traviata at His Majesty's Theatre this March, featuring soprano Jessica Blunt in her highly anticipated role debut as Violetta. This performance marks a significant milestone for Blunt, who has rapidly ascended through the ranks of the opera world after joining the company's Wesfarmers Arts Young Artist Program in 2024.

From Understudy to Leading Lady: Blunt's Rapid Rise

Blunt's journey to this starring role is a testament to her talent and resilience. In 2025, during the final performance of WA Opera's Il Trovatore, she was thrust into the spotlight when lead soprano Naomi Johns fell ill. With just three hours' notice, Blunt stepped up to perform the lead role of Leonora, sight-reading the score on stage with the support of WA Symphony Orchestra conductor Asher Fisch. "I knew that if I couldn't do it, then no one would get to go on stage that night," Blunt recalls, highlighting her dedication to the craft.

This impromptu performance showcased her ability to remain calm under pressure, singing in Italian while managing the complexities of the role. Now, with extensive preparation, Blunt is ready to embody Violetta in director Sarah Giles' critically acclaimed production of La Traviata, a Giuseppe Verdi masterpiece based on Alexandre Dumas' novel The Lady Of The Camellias.

A Feminist Perspective on a Classic Love Story

La Traviata tells the tragic love story of courtesan Violetta and aristocrat Alfredo, who defy societal norms to be together, only to face heartbreak and betrayal. Blunt describes the opera as "one of those operas that really reflects humanity", exploring themes of love, trust, and morbidity that remain relevant today. What sets Giles' production apart is its feminist approach, giving Violetta agency in her own narrative.

Blunt explains, "Sarah realised that Violetta has never had the chance to tell her story herself, so she's taken this real feminist perspective onto the story." This interpretation highlights Violetta's dual identity as a public-facing party girl and a vulnerable woman battling illness and seeking love, offering a deeper, more personal portrayal.

Blunt's Journey to Perth and Professional Fulfillment

Originally from Lake Macquarie, Blunt is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and London's Royal Academy of Music. She moved to Perth in 2023 after an eight-year long-distance relationship with her Perth-raised husband, finding a home in Bayswater. Joining the Wesfarmers Arts Young Artist Program was a pivotal moment, bridging her studies with professional life. "Being able to do it in Perth was awesome," she shares, "because it meant that I could feel grounded at home with my husband, but also work in this amazing State opera company."

Blunt draws inspiration from her predecessor, Samantha Clarke, who played Violetta in WA Opera's 2022 production and is now the company's 2026 artist in residence. Meeting with Clarke to discuss the role provided valuable insights, with Blunt noting, "to be taking on the torch is really exciting."
