John Farnham Celebrates 77th Birthday with Family Amid Cancer Recovery
John Farnham Turns 77 with Family as He Recovers from Cancer

John Farnham marked his 77th birthday on Wednesday surrounded by his loving family, including his one-year-old grandson Jett, as he continues his recovery from a gruelling battle with mouth cancer. The music legend's son, James Farnham, shared a heartwarming tribute on social media, posting a photo of Farnham beaming with Jett on his knee. “Happy Birthday Grandpa! We love you so much,” James wrote. “Thank you for everything and being who you are.”

Rare Public Appearance Amid Cancer Battle

The photo offers a rare glimpse of Farnham, who has largely stayed out of the spotlight since his cancer diagnosis. He was diagnosed with mouth cancer in August 2024 and underwent a 12-hour life-saving surgery to remove the tumour, followed by reconstructive surgery on his face and jaw. During his recovery, Farnham struggled with speaking and eating, and he confirmed in May that he would never sing again. “We can rule that out,” he told the Herald Sun. “Because of the surgeries to my mouth and face over the past few years, singing on stage is not something I can consider again. It's just not possible.”

Tribute Concert to Raise Funds for Cancer Charity

Farnham made the sad admission while announcing a special concert he has curated to honour his music and raise funds for Head and Neck Cancer Australia. The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend — The Celebration Concert will take place on September 20 at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, featuring a star-studded line-up including Celine Dion, Hugh Jackman, Keith Urban, Richard Marx, Tina Arena, Jimmy Barnes, Mahalia Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Diesel, Hans, Human Nature, Jack Jones, Jessica Mauboy, Ruby Rodgers, Jon Stevens, Mitch Tambo, Mark Vincent, and Ross Wilson.

Concert Sold Out in Hours

The concert sold out within hours of going on sale last month, with premium tickets priced at $1,650 and the cheapest seats at $179. The charity expects the event to make a significant contribution to supporting Australians affected by head and neck cancers, according to AAP.

Musical Honouring Farnham's Legacy

In addition to the concert, a musical titled Whispering Jack: The John Farnham Musical will run in Sydney from November to December. The production celebrates the 40th anniversary of Whispering Jack, the highest-selling Australian album of all time. Sydney Theatre Company, artistic director Mitchell Butel, Michael Cassel Group, TalentWorks, and writer Jack Yabsley have collaborated to bring Farnham's life and music to the stage. Michael Paynter, known for his role in Jesus Christ Superstar, has been cast as Farnham.
