Lake Clifton Author Samantha Zinner Wins MSWA Grant to Pursue Novel Dream

Lake Clifton-based aspiring author Samantha Zinner is leveraging recently acquired funding to transform her debut novel dream into a tangible reality. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 32, Ms Zinner was selected as one of eight recipients of the inaugural MSWA Life not Limits Grant, a new program specifically designed to assist individuals living with neurological conditions.

The grant provides financial support ranging from $1000 to $5000 for significant personal or community projects, offering a unique opportunity for those often sidelined by chronic illness. Ms Zinner, who has recently completed the first draft of her initial book, expressed immense excitement upon learning of her selection, particularly noting the significance of being chosen in the grant's first year.

Empowering Creativity Amid Health Challenges

"It was such an eclectic group of recipients, too; it was so interesting seeing the scope of what this grant has empowered others to do," Ms Zinner remarked. She highlighted the daily realities of managing a chronic condition, explaining, "When you've got a chronic illness, you have to budget your energy in life; you put a lot of effort into surviving, things like exploring your passions or creativity fall to the bottom of the priority list."

To advance her literary ambitions, Ms Zinner is allocating her grant funds toward completing an advanced professional writing program aimed at refining her manuscript. "This program pushes you to elevate your work, and past participants have strengthened their manuscripts by as much as 200 per cent," she noted. "I've already completed my exploratory first draft, but this next stage could be what ignites its transformation into a publishable book."

A Coming-of-Age Story with Personal Parallels

Ms Zinner's young adult novel is described as a coming-of-age narrative centered on a university student residing in Sydney who begins experiencing unusual symptoms and embarks on a quest to comprehend the underlying causes. Interestingly, Ms Zinner commenced writing the book prior to her own diagnosis, yet she now observes distinct parallels within her work.

"Funnily enough, I started the book before I got diagnosed, but now I see parallels in what I was writing," Ms Zinner shared, underscoring the unintentional yet profound connection between her personal journey and her creative output.

Honoring a Legacy of Advocacy and Inclusion

The Life not Limits Grant was established in memory of Ros Harman, a writer and fervent advocate for accessibility and inclusion who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 26 and later with motor neurone disease. MSWA CEO Melanie Kiely emphasized that launching the grant in Ms Harman's name serves as a powerful mechanism to translate the belief that a diagnosis should never dictate one's destiny into concrete opportunities.

"Ros challenged all of us to see potential first, not barriers," Ms Kiely stated. "This grant builds on that vision, recognising the talent, determination and creativity within our neuro community and giving people the resources to bring their ideas to life."

Funding Freedom Beyond Traditional Avenues

Made possible through the generosity of West Australians via MSWA's fundraising initiatives, including the Mega Home Lottery, the grant provides recipients with the liberty to pursue goals that typically fall outside the scope of conventional disability funding. Ms Kiely affirmed that this approach enables individuals to explore passions and projects that might otherwise remain unattainable.

Reflecting on the transformative impact of the grant, Ms Zinner posed a poignant question: "Who says MS has to stop you from doing anything?" Her story stands as a testament to resilience and the pursuit of creative aspirations despite health challenges, inspiring others within the neurological community to chase their dreams with renewed vigor and support.
