MAFS star Jules Robinson has faced a storm of criticism online after revealing she hired a 'gender expert' to try to ensure her third child is a girl. The television personality, who already has two sons with husband Cameron Merchant, defended her decision as a positive use of available science.
Revelation sparks debate
In a recent interview, Robinson, 44, admitted to working with a 'gender swaying' practitioner to fulfill her dream of having a daughter. She said she is a 'huge believer' in the power of intention and mindset. 'I think it's quite a positive thing to do to look at if you are visual and when you manifest,' she explained.
Gender swaying experts use a science-based approach, studying biochemistry and hormones to build preconception plans aimed at producing a child of a desired sex. Robinson added: 'If the information's there, why not be open to receiving it — which is what I've been doing.'
Online backlash and response
The decision has been met with mixed reactions online. Some critics argued that parents should not try to choose the gender of their child. One person wrote: 'You get what you're granted. Be grateful, some people have none.' However, others supported her, with one comment saying: 'Good for her. I would do the same if I had two boys already.'
Robinson insisted she would be happy with another boy but saw no harm in trying to sway the odds. 'If I hold that child and it's a little boy, oh my god, I'm going to love him more than anything; of course, I will,' she said. 'I'm just saying that if there's any power that Cam and I have, naturally, to sway the baby to be a girl, then we're going to try that.'
Details of the method
Robinson described her monthly routine: 'I meet with her every single month and then on the 10th day of my cycle, I go and have a blood test done, which reads my hormone levels. Then you try to conceive before ovulation because female sperm live a lot longer than male. So the idea is that the female sperm will still be there and you conceive.'
The couple, who met on season six of Married at First Sight in 2019, married later that year. They welcomed their first son, Ollie, in 2020, and their second son, Carter, in 2024. Robinson noted: 'Cam and I have had our little girl name ever since we were in the Married At First Sight experiment together. I know Cam would absolutely love a daughter.'
