A man has been left with his heart broken after his girlfriend of three years brutally called time on their relationship just one day after her birthday.

Sharing his pitiful story on Reddit, the British man, 21, explained he had bought his partner, 29, a state-of-the-art gaming PC, which she had been "begging" for. Then, one day later, she broke up with him, and her friends claimed she had only prolonged the relationship so she could get her hands on the gadget.

"Ex-girlfriend waited until the day after her birthday to break up with me to ensure she got a gift," the 21-year-old shared on Monday. "I was with my girlfriend for three years now. Bought her a gaming PC for her birthday that cost just shy of £2,500 ($4,700). She broke up with me the day after. Completely blindsided me."

He added, "I've since heard from a friend of her friend that she'd been planning to break up with me for months, but just wanted to wait because she knew I was getting her this. I've done some more digging and managed to get some screenshots from two mutuals where she admits to them that she was/had been holding out until her birthday so she'd get it."

Continuing his post, the man said he would have never normally spent that kind of money on someone, but he loved his girlfriend and knew how much she wanted the PC. "We're both gamers. She was using an 11-year-old desktop that had the case literally falling apart at times. The frame was held together with masking tape in places," he went on. "She had been begging for a new PC for her birthday. Make and model. GPU she wanted etc. And yeah... It's an expensive lesson. Never had someone use me before like that, so it really hurt."

Appealing for advice, the heartbroken man asked whether he had any grounds to get the $5,000 PC back. One commenter said, "She's a scumbag, but legally you have no grounds. And even if you did, legal costs would be greater than PC cost most likely." Another person said the Brit had "dodged a bullet", while a third urged him to write the situation off as a "not so nice life lesson". "Maybe 'accidentally' share these screenshots so everyone knows the type of person she is," they wrote. "I send you my sympathy as it's legally hers. Consider it a cancellation fee for getting someone this awful out of your life," echoed a fourth.
