A Cairns man has been sentenced to prison for a series of crimes including the robbery of a tobacconist and a break-in at an aged care home. The 34-year-old appeared before the Cairns District Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
Details of the Offenses
The court heard that the man robbed a tobacconist in Manunda on March 15, stealing cash and cigarettes. He threatened the store attendant with a knife during the incident. Just days later, on March 18, he broke into an aged care facility in Bungalow, where he stole personal items from residents.
Impact on Victims
The prosecutor highlighted the trauma caused to the victims, particularly the elderly residents who felt violated by the intrusion. The aged care home manager stated that the break-in had a significant emotional impact on the vulnerable residents.
Defense counsel argued that the man had a history of drug addiction and mental health issues, which contributed to his actions. He expressed remorse for his crimes and acknowledged the harm he had caused.
Sentencing and Rehabilitation
Judge Julie Smith sentenced the man to three years and six months in prison, with a non-parole period of two years. She noted the seriousness of the offenses but also considered his early guilty plea and efforts towards rehabilitation. The sentence includes a recommendation for drug treatment programs while in custody.
The man was also ordered to pay compensation to the tobacconist and the aged care home for the stolen items and damages.
This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of criminal behavior and the importance of protecting vulnerable members of the community.
