A 30-year-old man charged with indecently assaulting a student at a school in the Adelaide Hills had passed all required police checks, according to his employer.
Incident details
The alleged assault occurred on school grounds on April 27. The man, who was in Australia on a working visa, had been employed for two years by a company contracted to change sanitary bins at schools.
Employer's response
The company confirmed that the man had passed all necessary police checks before being hired. It stated that he was an external service provider and did not work directly with children. Letters were sent to parents across the state informing them that an external contractor had been arrested.
“Well, they’ve got to be thoroughly checked. Not just by the police but their work record,” one local said. Another added, “I guess it comes down to the screening again and just making sure that there’s adequate screening behind someone.”
Legal proceedings
The man has been stood down from his position and is on police bail. He is set to face court in July.
