Ex-Police Officer Andy Brittain's Leap of Faith Transforms Vulnerable Youth in Geelong
Ex-Cop Andy Brittain Transforms Vulnerable Youth in Geelong

Former police officer Andy Brittain took a leap of faith when he left the force to pursue a new calling: transforming the lives of vulnerable young people in Geelong. His journey from law enforcement to youth mentorship has been nothing short of remarkable, and his impact is being felt across the community.

From Policing to Purpose

After more than a decade in the police force, Brittain felt a growing desire to make a difference in a different way. He saw firsthand the challenges facing young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and knew he had to act. In 2018, he resigned from his position and founded a program aimed at providing support, guidance, and opportunities for at-risk youth.

“I wanted to help them before they ended up in the system,” Brittain said. “Instead of reacting to problems, I wanted to be proactive and give them the tools to succeed.”

The Program’s Approach

The program, which operates in Geelong and surrounding areas, focuses on building resilience, self-esteem, and life skills. Through mentoring, workshops, and outdoor activities, participants learn to overcome obstacles and set positive goals. Brittain and his team work closely with schools, community organizations, and families to identify young people who could benefit from the program.

“We don’t just tell them what to do; we show them through example,” Brittain explained. “It’s about building trust and showing them that someone believes in them.”

Transforming Lives

The results speak for themselves. Many participants have gone on to complete their education, secure employment, and avoid the pitfalls of crime and substance abuse. Parents and teachers have reported significant improvements in behavior and outlook.

“Andy has been a lifeline for my son,” said one mother. “He was heading down a dark path, but now he has hope and a future.”

Brittain’s work has not gone unnoticed. He has received local awards and recognition for his contributions to the community. However, he remains focused on the mission ahead.

Challenges and Rewards

Running a nonprofit comes with its own set of challenges, from funding to staffing. Brittain often works long hours and relies on donations and grants to keep the program running. Despite the difficulties, he says the rewards far outweigh the struggles.

“Seeing a young person turn their life around is the greatest reward,” he said. “It reminds me why I took this leap of faith.”

One former participant, now a young adult, shared how the program changed his life. “I was angry and lost. Andy showed me that I had choices and that my past didn’t define my future. I’m now studying to become a youth worker myself.”

Expanding the Impact

Brittain has plans to expand the program to reach more young people across Victoria. He is also developing new initiatives, including a mentorship network and a job placement service. His goal is to create a sustainable model that can be replicated in other communities.

“The need is huge,” he said. “But every young person we help is a victory. I’m committed to making a difference, one life at a time.”

For Brittain, the leap of faith was not just about leaving the police force; it was about embracing a new purpose. His story is a testament to the power of second chances and the impact one person can have on the lives of many.
