Heath Ledger's Teenage Chicken Treat Commercial Almost Ended His Career

Heath Ledger is best known for his iconic roles in The Dark Knight and 10 Things I Hate About You, but before he became a Hollywood superstar, the Perth-born actor was filming a commercial for Chicken Treat. This early gig nearly cost him his acting career due to a teenage misstep involving brightly colored hair.

Discovery and Early Roles

The Oscar-winning actor was first discovered by former talent agent Viv Poulton during a school production of Hamlet at Guildford Grammar. As a teenager, Ledger quickly began landing television roles, including a "quite well paid" commercial for Chicken Treat alongside The Castle star Michael Caton.

However, the high school student, who was a talented athlete with many hobbies, made a critical error that almost derailed his budding career before it could properly launch.

The Hair Dye Disaster

"He did a Rock Eisteddfod at Guildford the night or so before this shoot date, which was all signed, sealed and delivered. And he turned up to the office the day before with blue hair, purple hair," Ms Poulton revealed to PerthNow.

She immediately realized the problem, stating, "I thought, you can't go to Chicken Treat with purple hair, so I had to run him down to my hairdresser. He didn't have 10 cents, of course, to get it out. It was horrific. I thought, 'I'm gonna get sued'."

A Close Call

Ms Poulton, who was the former director of Artist Management Australia (previously Frog Management) based in Osborne Park, explained that the company's earlier headquarters in Northbridge saved both her and her client's fleeting career.

"He certainly would have been sent home," she continued. "So luckily, the hairdresser wasn't far, Lake Street. The office was in Lake Street. She was just around the corner, so she quickly did it for me, dyed it and bleached it to get it back to blonde."

Reflecting on the incident, Ms Poulton added, "That was a funny start, it didn't even occur to him not to do it."

From Perth to Hollywood Stardom

Following this early scare, Ledger's career quickly gained momentum. He soon caught the attention of American studios, appearing in successful films like 10 Things I Hate About You and A Knight's Tale. His most notable achievement came posthumously when he won an Academy Award for his unforgettable portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight.

Ironically, his unhinged character's distinctive dyed hairstyle became critical to the role's success, a stark contrast to the hair issue that nearly ended his career years earlier.

Legacy and Contemporary Hopes

No Australian male actor has won an Academy Award for acting since Ledger achieved this feat in 2009. However, fellow Australian actor Jacob Elordi hopes to match his compatriot's victory. Elordi is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as The Creature in Frankenstein (2025), with the awards ceremony scheduled for Monday morning local time.

This teenage anecdote highlights the precarious beginnings of what would become an extraordinary acting career, demonstrating how a simple hair dye mistake almost prevented the world from experiencing Heath Ledger's remarkable talent.
