A 23-year-old man is set to appear in court after being charged with armed robbery following an incident at a service station in Newcastle's Hamilton suburb. Police allege the man threatened a worker with a screwdriver before stealing cash and cigarettes.
Incidents Unfold Overnight
Officers were called to two separate businesses in Hamilton within a five-hour period overnight on Monday, May 11, 2026. The first call came at approximately 8:45 pm, when police attended a bottle shop on Tudor Street. It was reported that two men entered the premises and allegedly stole seven bottles of spirits.
Then, at around 2:00 am on Tuesday, May 12, police were dispatched to a service station also on Tudor Street following reports of an armed robbery. According to police, two men entered the service station and threatened a staff member with a screwdriver before making off with cash and cigarettes.
Investigation and Arrest
Newcastle City Police District officers established a crime scene and launched an investigation into both incidents. Shortly after 10:00 am on Tuesday, police attempted to stop a 23-year-old man on Gordon Street in Hamilton. The man fled on foot but was arrested on Elcho Street after a short pursuit.
Upon searching the man, officers allegedly uncovered and seized 18 pouches of tobacco, two packets of cigarettes, and bolt cutters. The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged with larceny, stalking or intimidating, and robbery armed with an offensive weapon.
Court Appearance and Ongoing Inquiries
