A newborn infant has been discovered deceased inside a tent in Wagga Wagga, located in the New South Wales Riverina region, while a second baby has been hospitalised in critical condition.

Emergency services responded to a welfare concern report at Cadell Place shortly after 4:20 pm on Saturday. The tent was set up in bushland along the Murrumbidgee River, according to 7NEWS.com.au.

Officers from the Riverina Police District arrived at the scene and found a 37-year-old woman, the body of a newborn baby, and a second infant inside the tent.

Paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the woman and the surviving infant before transporting them both to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. The baby remains in a critical condition.

A crime scene has been established as detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
