The union movement has played a key role in making Newcastle great, ensuring that the city's central part in the state's development benefits more than just a select few. Since 1899, the Public Service Association and Community and Public Sector Union NSW branch (PSA CPSU NSW) has been an essential part of this movement in the city, protecting public services and advocating for the workers who deliver them.
Representing Hunter public sector workers
The PSA CPSU NSW represents public sector workers across the Hunter Valley, including school support staff, Service NSW employees, Transport for NSW workers, and prison officers. It also represents employees in TAFE, disability support, and at the University of Newcastle. The union has a strong track record of successfully opposing the privatisation of public assets and fighting back against job cuts.
New office in Islington
In March, the PSA CPSU NSW officially opened its new Newcastle office at 24 Maitland Road, Islington. This move strengthens the union's presence in the Hunter while building on a proud history in the region that dates back to October 1899. The office was officially opened by Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp, with other attendees including Member for Port Stephens and Minister for Families and Communities Kate Washington, and Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery.
PSA CPSU NSW President Nicole Jess highlighted the significance of the new office. "This office is about being present, accessible and responsive to our members in the region," Ms Jess said. "We have been here for more than 125 years and will stay here for more than 125 years into the future."
PSA CPSU NSW General Secretary Stewart Little also emphasised the importance of the investment. "This new office strengthens our ability to support members locally, ensuring they have access to representation, advice and advocacy close to where they live and work," Mr Little said. "Our members deliver vital public services every day. Opening this office ensures the PSA CPSU NSW is right alongside them, backing them at work and in their communities."
The new office represents a significant commitment to regional members, ensuring that the union remains a strong and visible presence in the Hunter for years to come.
