A former teacher from the Hunter region has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to sexual offences involving a 16-year-old student. Daniel Belcher, 28, appeared in Newcastle District Court on Friday, where he was handed a custodial sentence for his crimes.

The court heard that Belcher, who taught at a school in Maitland, engaged in a sexual relationship with the teenager between August and November 2021. The offences came to light when the student confided in a friend, who then reported the matter to school authorities.
Belcher was arrested in December 2021 and initially faced multiple charges. He later pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual intercourse with a person under his authority, and one count of grooming a person under 16 for sexual activity.
Sentencing Remarks
Judge Sarah Huggett described Belcher's actions as a "gross breach of trust," noting that he had exploited his position of authority for personal gratification. She emphasised the significant impact the offending had on the victim, who suffered from anxiety and depression as a result.
"The offender was in a position of trust and responsibility, and he abused that trust in the most serious way," Judge Huggett said. "The victim has been left with lasting psychological harm."
Sentence Imposed
Belcher was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, with a non-parole period of two years and three months. He will be eligible for release on parole in March 2025. His name has been added to the sex offenders register, and he will be subject to supervision upon release.
The court also heard that Belcher had no prior criminal history and had expressed remorse for his actions. However, the judge noted that the seriousness of the offences required a significant period of incarceration.

A spokesperson for the New South Wales Department of Education said that Belcher had been suspended from teaching immediately after the allegations emerged and that his employment had since been terminated.
