Teen in Induced Coma After Mount Garnet Hit-and-Run

A 17-year-old boy is fighting for his life in an induced coma after a hit-and-run incident in the Far North Queensland town of Mount Garnet. The teenager was struck by a vehicle on the Kennedy Highway, near the intersection of the Gulf Development Road, around 7:30 pm on Saturday evening.

Emergency services rushed the boy to the Mount Garnet Hospital in a critical condition. He was later airlifted to the Cairns Hospital, where he remains in an induced coma. Police have described his condition as critical but stable.

Police Investigation Underway

Forensic officers from the Far North District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. It is believed the driver of the vehicle involved fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving the teenager lying on the road.

Detectives have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage from the area at the time to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking with the driver of a white utility vehicle that was seen in the vicinity shortly before the crash.

Community in Shock

The Mount Garnet community has been left shaken by the incident, with locals expressing their shock and concern for the teenager’s wellbeing. The small town, located about 160 kilometers southwest of Cairns, is known for its close-knit community. Local businesses and residents have taken to social media to offer support to the victim’s family.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s a terrible thing to happen, especially to such a young person. We all hope he pulls through.”
