A woman has been left fearing for her life after a gang of alleged hoons surrounded her car and smashed every window on a dark country road near Mallala, approximately 60 kilometres from Adelaide, on Saturday night.
Confrontation turns violent
The woman had left her home to confront individuals performing burnouts at a nearby intersection. However, the group allegedly turned on her, surrounding her vehicle and shattering each window while she sat trapped behind the wheel.
The shocking attack was captured on video, showing at least one offender wielding a weapon as the group swarms the car. The vehicle's doors hang open as the woman makes a desperate dash to escape.
A friend of the victim, David Paton, said she believed she was going to die and had no choice but to ram the offenders' vehicles to get away.
“If you need to hit somebody, hit a vehicle, hit an object to save your life… then you do it,” Paton told 7NEWS.
Local MP calls for more police patrols
Paton, who is also the area's newly elected MP, says the attack highlights the need for more police patrols in the region, particularly after events at the nearby Mallala Motorsport Park.
“It’s typically drifting that brings the wrong crowds,” he said.
Drifting is a motorsport held at the nearby Mallala Motorsport Park and The Bend Motorsport Park. It involves controlled skids and high-powered cars sliding around corners in a race-like environment between two cars at a time. It does not involve burnouts. Drifting is primarily judged on control, angle of the car, and the line taken during the race.
After the violent confrontation, two people from the alleged group involved also went to police to report the crash.
The Barossa Criminal Investigation Branch has now taken over the case. No arrests have been made.
