Handmade Canberra Christmas Market Starts Early Due to Kendrick Lamar
Handmade Canberra Christmas Market Starts Early

Canberra's beloved Handmade Markets have kicked off their festive season earlier than planned, bringing a Christmas shopping bonanza to the capital this weekend. The popular artisan event was forced to reschedule after a clash with the massive Spilt Milk music festival and its headline act, Kendrick Lamar.

Why the Market Dates Changed

The Christmas market was originally scheduled for December 12-14 at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC). However, the ACT government subsequently approved the Spilt Milk concert to be held on the same weekend, initially stating both events could proceed simultaneously.

The situation shifted when international superstar Kendrick Lamar's availability meant Spilt Milk would be staged in November instead of December. Ultimately, Handmade Market owner Julie Nichols made the decision to move the Christmas market, citing serious concerns about public access to the venue and potential traffic gridlock.

New Market Dates and Details

Shoppers can now find the festive markets at EPIC across three days:

  • Friday, November 28: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM
  • Saturday, November 29 and Sunday, November 30: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

The markets are housed within the Budawang, Coorong, and Parkes pavilions at Exhibition Park.

What Shoppers Can Discover

This rescheduled event is the biggest Handmade Market of the year, featuring more than 260 unique stalls showcasing the work of Australian artisans and designers.

Shoppers can browse an extensive range of handcrafted goods, from unique jewellery and delicate ceramics to festive gingerbread and personalised Christmas cards. Among the featured artists is Sydney glass artist Gisela Spallek, who will be presenting her stunning pieces under the label A Fiery Heart.

The early scheduling provides a perfect opportunity for Canberrans to get a head start on their Christmas shopping while supporting local makers and finding truly unique gifts that can't be found in mainstream stores.
