Fundraising Concert Scrapped Amid Weather Dispute
Volunteers at Newcastle's iconic Fort Scratchley have issued a public apology after the sudden cancellation of their Music of the Guns concert last Saturday. The event, which was to be the historical society's biggest annual fundraiser, was called off despite fine weather conditions, leaving many in the community disappointed and confused.
Last-Minute Decision Leaves Volunteers Powerless
According to Rick Carter, Secretary of the Fort Scratchley Historical Society, volunteers and gun crews were already on-site preparing for the evening performance when a representative from another involved group raised concerns about a potential thunderstorm. The society requested that the final decision be postponed until 4pm, but were informed this was not possible as some members of the other group required an immediate call due to lengthy travel times.
The historical society was not given a say in the ultimate decision, and social media notices announcing the cancellation were posted by 2pm. This left the not-for-profit charity facing significant financial and logistical setbacks from which they are still recovering.
Financial Fallout and Future Plans
The cancellation has hit the charity hard. Pre-show preparations had already cost the society $2000, which is now unrecoverable. Ticket sales indicated an expected profit of around $3000, with several hundred more dollars anticipated from gate sales on the night.
In better news for ticket holders, the event has been tentatively rescheduled for February next year. All purchased tickets and prize draw tickets will be honoured for the new date. Those unable to attend the rescheduled concert can seek a refund through the original booking agent.
The Fort Scratchley Historical Society extends its gratitude to the people of Newcastle and the Hunter region for their continued support despite this setback, wishing everyone a happy and safe Christmas season.
