Canberra families are in for a festive treat this holiday season with free merry-go-round rides available in the city centre throughout December.
Free Festive Rides and Family Fun
The City Renewal Authority has announced that carousel rides in Petrie Plaza will be completely free from Monday, December 1 right through until Christmas Eve. The beloved merry-go-round will operate from 10am to 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 10am to 4pm from Sunday to Thursday, providing ample opportunity for children and families to enjoy this Christmas tradition.
Christmas Celebrations and Markets
The festive generosity extends beyond the carousel, with a free family-friendly City Christmas party scheduled for City Walk on Saturday, December 7 from 3pm to 9pm. This major community event will feature games, live music, children's workshops, roving entertainment and plenty of food options.
Canberra Centre's Festive Lane Markets will also bring holiday cheer to City Walk and Petrie Plaza across three days:
- Friday, December 6: 5pm to 9pm
- Saturday, December 7: 11am to 7pm
- Sunday, December 8: 10am to 4pm
Weekly Christmas Markets
Haig Park Village Christmas Markets will run every Sunday in December leading up to Christmas - specifically on the 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd. These popular markets will offer free Santa photos, a children's decoration station, live music, and special Christmas-themed market stalls.
Adding to the convenience for visitors, free bus and light rail travel to the city on Fridays will commence on December 6, making it easier for families to access all the Christmas festivities without worrying about transport costs.
